India’s Environment Minister Blames Harry Potter For Disappearing Owls

People even the urban middle class are so fascinated about the owls after Harry Potter that parents buy owls from illegal bird traders and present them to their children.
The conservation group Traffic, meanwhile, has called on the government to take strict actions against illegal traders to protect the beast birds from being sacrificed during the Hindu festival – Diwali after its author faced one of the strangest demands by a friend.
Author Abrar Ahmed said that he was surprised when his friend asked him to arrange a white owl for a boy's Harry Potter-themed 10th birthday.
"This was probably one of the strangest demands made to me as an ornithologist," he wrote in his report.
The author said that he then decided to probe the owl trade and was stunned to find that illegal traders catch endangered owls, trade, kill for medicine and even sacrifice them during black magic rituals.
