Africa expects internet revolution according to the survey; what is the trend in East Africa ?

A recent survey , Telecom Trends in Africa 2010 report and database 360 published by world wide worx  a leader in  international technology research based in South Africa shows that business across Africa are expecting a revolution in internet access , technology and costs as a result of the rush of the new undersea cables  connecting the continent.

More than 90 percent of business decision makers across Africa are expecting prices to drop and competition to increase dramatically .

In East african countries where the survey has been conducted where 101 people have been interviewed in Kenya , 75 in Uganda, 45 in Uganda (No data available for the surveyed people in Burundi and Rwanda )

Different industries including aerospace , agriculture , automotive , banking , education ,engineering, healthcare , government ,Information technology , logistics, manufacturing , security services , telecommunication ,travel and tourism utilities and others have been surveyed

Robinson one of the involved persons said "It’s amazing to see how the level of Internet usage shoots up wherever the new undersea cables have landed and fibre optic networks have linked the cables to urban centres. The East Africa countries, especially, are taking to social networking as a business tool to a greater extent than almost anywhere else in Africa."

The survey highlights Kenya and Uganda as the biggest African users of social networking for business. However, even landlocked countries that have recently seen major upgrades to their fibre optic networks, such as Botswana and Zambia, are also moving rapidly in this direction.

According to Internet world stats South Africa ranks fourth for total internet connections behind Egypt ,Nigeria and Morocco
the well connected nation in East Africa is Kenya followed by Uganda , Rwanda , Tanzania and Burundi at last place

from this survey one can recommend the progress in east African use of ICT in business as the habitual social values of African which is based of sharing , good news like opportunities for scholarships , jobs ,markets and so on .but we can also directly imply the  use of social network by a mass of population in these countries without a real out put some passing their whole working  hours in tchat on social network like facebook which don't really make profit for them.

We could also argue that the biggest trend in African countries especially in East Africa in use of ICT is relatively    driven by mass communication like Radio  FM stations to whom most of the population is following on hourly basis to the extend that the online web radio is popular to some compared to the written stories exemples are like Urunana at BBC in Rwanda and Burundi and some parts of DRC Tanzania and Uganda and other drama and  jokes followed by many in  Kenya when posted on youtube
The music industry also is one of the rising economy in East Africa and because most of the followers are the young generation they also follow online publications of musics , lyrics ,videos of their beloved stars.

The trend also has opened to telecommunication companies to open up their market for mostly the diaspora community which used to rely on extra costly prices of telephone from out side an example is MTN company opening up their online IMS registration to make sure the prices whether you are in Europe ,USA , Asia  or any where else in world you can call on the same rates like one in his country . Tigo also has launched a campaign to reduce drastically international call rates

From a geospatial point of view, a lot is still to be done as an exemple the service offered by google maps in many industrialized countries to  navigate the towns in 3D exploring the buildings is not yet implemented in most of all east African towns and this is a big market which is not exploited from the potential it could bling in real estate business, marketing and others .

Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6" Display, Graphite, 3G Works Globally - Latest GenerationIntegrating maps in mobile devices is not yet done and could also change drastically the navigation in east African towns and suburb especially in tourism like it has been implemented to track gorillas using iphones

The surveys conducted are a good tool to analyse the trend , needs and way forward in use of ICT for development and should inspire decision makers and business people to open eyes on new innovative opportunities out there but also it should be a good strart for young enterpreuners to jump in the coming opportunities to make sure they are not the lasts in the new technologies use and profits.
