GIS software firm opens in Rwanda

 ESRI, a global firm that makes and distributes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software used in planning and management of resources such as land has opened in Rwanda.
 The Kigali based office will also serve Burundi, the company's officials told East African Business Week during the official launch recently.
 ESRI Rwanda Limited is a subsidiary of ESRI Germany. The company officially registered in August 2010.
 Kaspar Kundert, the Managing Director for ESRI Rwanda believes that planning is necessary for Rwanda to achieve its vision 2020, which aims at seeing the country migrating from low income to middle income economy.
 "We believe that Geographic Information Systems are important for the country's vision 2020.....to do all the planning and development  necessary to achieve the vision."
 The company says that GIS is being used for managing spatial data and for supporting decision-making processes in various governmental domains such as cadastre, public health, education, transportation and road planning, utilities, and agriculture as well as in the private sector.
 Esri Rwanda supplies GIS and related products, offers maintenance, on-the-job training, workshops, and consultancy services.
